Throughout his career, Elan became frustrated with an evaluation process that is often based not on objective data but on informal interviews, references and 360s. Most critically we mistake having done it before in one set of circumstances with being able to do it again in a different set of circumstances. Despite monumental stakes—and countless tools, tests, and experts— we consistently get it wrong. Executive hires and promotions fail 50% of the time.
